Spelling Bee FAQS

Q1: Do I have to stand up and say the word and spell it?
No, you and your team members use a white board and write the word down on the board within a 30-second time limit.

Q2: Can I get a sponsor to pay for portion of the $250 fee and my team members pay for the remaining portion?
Yes, actually that is a great way to help defer the tax deductible cost of the entrance fee.  If you have Joe’s Cuppa and Suzie Q’s Curls and Cuts sponsoring your team for $75 each, they would be listed as a sponsor of your team in the Spelling Bee Booklet.  And don’t forget to mention there are sole sponsor options with expanded advertising.

Q3: The potential sponsor says they must have documentation of SEF’s non-profit status, how can I obtain that information?
Please contact, SEF President, Missy Hollenback at melisahollenback@hotmail.com or 508-284-7314, she will provide you and your sponsor with the appropriate documentation.

Q4: I would really like to participate but I do not have a full 4-person team.  What options do I have?
There are others like yourself with partial teams who need an extra speller or two. Contact Missy Hollenback at melisahollenback@hotmail.cm or 508/284-7314 and she will match you up with another speller or a team.

Q5: I am a high school student, could I be on a spelling team?
Yes, you can be on a team.  We wanted to get the message out that this is not the National Spelling Bee for middle school children.  When people first hear, “spelling bee” they immediately think of being in elementary school and standing in front of the class.  And don’t forget the entry fee for a high school team is only $100.

Q6: What prize will be offered to the top team?
The prize for Shrewsbury’s Splendiferous Spellers will be a trophy and recognition throughout the community. The competition is all in good fun!
